Issue 6 August 2022

Welcome to the August issue of the Academy Newsletter

Summer is flying by and the new school year is just around the corner. Given the ongoing concerns for K-12 school safety, administrators continue to focus on the serious issue of student, faculty and staff security.

In this month’s edition of Academy, Ron Baer, ASSA ABLOY Director of Business Development for K-12, discusses what’s being done and what should be done to carefully identify door security needs and assess solution advancements as well as the pitfalls to avoid.

We also highlight Ron this month and his 28 years of experience and passionate leadership in the education security market.

As part of our back-to-school theme, we shine our product spotlight on locks and lock status indicators for classroom doors – simple solutions that go a long way.

And Katie Flower fills you in on what an exit is, how many you need and what separation is required between them on this month’s episode of Code Corner with Katie.

Enjoy the rest of summer and thanks for taking a brief time out to read this month’s edition!

Solutions for safer, more secure schools in the face of danger

For many of us, it seems like the prospects for light at the end of the tunnel are slim, especially as it pertains to an act of violence. But there are door security solutions that can help. Many are relatively simple and affordable fixes.

Simple solutions for securing classroom doors from the inside/out

Ensuring classroom doors are properly locked when periods are in session is a mandated requirement for protecting those inside. Fortunately, districts across the country are on a mission to retrofit schoolroom mortise locks so faculty can lock classroom doors from inside the room, reducing exposure to potential threats by eliminating the need to go out into the hallway. Many are going a step farther and adding lock/unlock door status indicators.
