Meet Lester LaPierre
Director of Business Development, Electronic Access Control for ASSA ABLOY
If you have any questions about electronic access control (EAC) and locking systems, Lester LaPierre probably has more answers than most. That’s because he’s been a leader in his field and the security industry for more than 25 years.
For instance, Lester introduced smart cards for online access control in the late ‘90s, pioneered wireless locks in the early 2000s and led the adoption of IP-enabled locking systems in the late 2000s. Since 2007, he’s been spearheading business development for Electro-Mechanical and EAC solutions at ASSA ABLOY as well as overseeing EAC project funnel management.
“I might be a bit biased,” says Lester. “But I’d have to say wireless locks are probably the most significant advancement I’ve seen in my career. Initially, they were used sparingly. Today they’re installed by the thousands in residence halls, classrooms, hospitals, federal facilities and many other locations. They’re now expected on most access control projects.”
Lester’s fearless, enterprising approach to technology and product support started early on. Prior to entering the security profession, Lester served six years in the Air Force as an avionics technician supporting USAF Hurricane Hunters. Soon after, he joined a company where he managed distribution of wireless local area network products in Asia. He then moved to a firm to lead product management for three generations of PC card modems. Along the way, he studied Adult and Vocational Education and earned a degree in Business Administration.
Today, in addition to his business development role at ASSA ABLOY, Lester provides onboarding for EAC sales teams and Electro-Mechanical Specialists. He also manages the company’s Authorized Channel Partner and Certified Integrator programs for locking solutions that incorporate WiFi, PoE, Aperio®, OSDP and Wiegand technologies.
“My role is a culmination of all my past experiences,” he adds. “And I’ve been given the latitude to contribute to all those aspects, which is very fulfilling. Most importantly, senior management supports the need to spotlight excellence. There’s nothing I enjoy more than to recognize our high performers for their outstanding contributions!”
Action-oriented, dedicated and competitive, it’s obvious Lester stays plenty busy as a leader and contributor who is passionate about the security business and business development. But he’s not all business all the time. Family is top priority, too. During off-hours, you’ll likely find him at home in suburban Chicago relaxing with wife Nan (his high school sweetheart that he married nearly 44 years ago) and youngest son Jared. Or they might be visiting his oldest son Grant out west in Scottsdale. Then again, he could be somewhere enjoying his favorite outdoor activities like motorsports, mountain biking and photography.
So, along with the immense industry expertise he’s gained that he’s always eager to share, it appears Lester has found good answers to leading a healthy, balanced life that keeps him energized and right on going.
As Lester put it, “A former mentor once said to me ‘Never leave a job you enjoy.’ Fact is, I enjoy what I’m doing. We have the best EAC solutions, the best team and we’re all making a difference. It’s an honor to be part of the ASSA ABLOY family.”
