It was just a year ago this month that the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) officially opened the doors of the Las Vegas Convention Center’s (LVCC) $1 billion, 1.4 million square foot West Hall expansion to welcome the city’s first major post-pandemic convention.
The West Hall is an incredible venue that features contemporary design, lots of natural light and 600,000 square feet of exhibition space, over half of which is column-free, the largest open exhibition floor of its kind in North America. Multiple entrance doors open into an open-air atrium complete with an amazing 10,000 square foot Samsung 8K digital screen.
The project broke ground in September 2018 and construction proceeded as planned even through the pandemic. Outfitting the many door openings at the massive facility required an equally massive scope of work that included egress, freight, ADA components, and more. To help meet the challenge and the specs, the LVCVA project team worked with the local ASSA ABLOY team to find just the right mix of products and solutions.
According to Helen Mirchi, ASSA ABLOY End User Consultant, “The LVCC needed seamless door hardware options throughout the West Hall building. By that, I mean options that provided a uniform look with quality, durable finishes as well as consistent, reliable functionality.
“They also required ongoing dependable support from the manufacturer and wanted the ease and transparent accountability of working with one company. They’re getting that continuity across all the ASSA ABLOY brands they chose.”
Here's a glimpse at the ASSA ABLOY solutions and products that the project team specified:
- Norton 6000 Electrohydraulic Closers
- SARGENT IN220 PoE Locks
- SARGENT 8900 Electrified Exit Devices
- SARGENT 8800 Rim Exit, ET & pull trim
- SARGENT 8600 CVR Exit Devices
- SARGENT 8200 Mortise Locks
- Securitron Electromechanical Device
- McKinney Full Mortise Hinges and Electric Hinges
- Curries 777SE Trio-E Energy Efficient Cores and 707 Polystyrene Cores
- Pemko Silicon Seal Adhesive-Backed Fire, Smoke Gasketing and Thermal Barrier Saddles
- Rockwood Flush Bolts, Guides, Strikes, Gravity Door Coordinators, and Door Pulls with Base Plates
Regarding the Norton 6000, Mirchi says the team expressed how much they like how the closer’s aesthetic look fits with the rest of the sleek architectural design and the fact that they’re seamless to integrate and easy to work on. Mirchi adds, “Tom Glaze, our ASSA ABLOY Electromechanical Specialist, has been a great help in onboarding the convention center’s engineering department on the Norton closers. He’s also coming back soon to provide extra training on the SARGENT 8900 Exit Devices so their crew becomes totally comfortable and self-sufficient with performing maintenance and troubleshooting on those as well. The 8900s are already easy to maintain and they’re not complicated. But their team is happy to know Tom and ASSA ABLOY are always ready and willing to provide further assistance whenever it’s required.”
Mirchi points out that value engineering was a top priority for the LVCC. “Even though the West Hall was a billion-dollar project, there were defined budget parameters for the openings that we had to adhere to. To help control energy costs, for example, SARGENT IN220 PoE locks were the logical choice since Power over Ethernet draws 86% less electricity than going the traditional hardwired route. With about 180 PoE locks in the building, that adds up to significant energy savings. Installation is much easier and quicker with PoE, too, which also improves cost-effectiveness.”
Mirchi says that a useful next step would be to smart tag all the new West Hall door assets to streamline maintenance and provide consistency when stocking parts, which helps improve economies of scale.
“ASSA ABLOY’s comprehensive line of door security solutions and products provides the LVCVA with the quality and quick, seamless support they expect,” says Mirchi. “One of the joys of working with ASSA ABLOY is knowing that we fully stand behind our products and always go above and beyond to solve whatever issues might pop up. We don’t waste time looking to blame; we simply forge ahead and get things resolved. That’s the level of hallmark service and performance they told us they require, and that’s what we’re always ready to deliver.”
