The American Iron and Steel Act: Understanding and Compliance

Each regulation our industry encounters, whether federal, state or local, has a legal aspect to it that often requires this follow-up. The American Iron and Steel (AIS) Act is no different.

Manufacturers and contractors throughout the industry are feeling the brunt of these regulations, especially for products made of iron and/or steel. Understanding the exact sourcing of these components is now an essential part of any company’s plans to pursue these publicly funded projects.

For the purpose of the AIS regulations, typically all hollow metal doors/frames will require an AIS certification by your manufacturer/supplier, while hardware may be considered for a “de minimis” incidental waiver, contingent upon its own iron and steel content or its value relative to the overall cost of materials on the project.
